About Ryan McFadden

Ryan was born in Santa Cruz, CA, and grew up in Sacramento. He lives in Berkeley, CA with his wife and two sons. By day, he’s a tech writer for SaaS startups all over the Bay Area. At night and on weekends, he crafts his own stories. He has an MFA in fiction from California College of the Arts, and his stories have appeared in several print and web publications. He’s currently neck-deep in writing his first novel.

His nonfiction essay “What is Left” (Reed Magazine no. 152) was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and indexed in “Notable essays and literary non-fiction of 2019” in the “Best American Essays, 2020” anthology.

Ryan is interested in the underbelly of the Golden State, especially suburbia and the cookie-cutter tract housing he grew up in. He finds much inspiration in the banal.
